The long awaited launch of the Galaxy S4, Samsung’s new flagship smartphone has, at last, taken place in New York today. Samsung have announced that the Galaxy S4 will be released on 26th April in one hundred and fifty five countries across the world. There have been lots of leaks about the specifications of the S4 but we have held off from comparing Samsung’s two models until the launch. Now that Samsung have revealed the detail of the S4 we are able to compare it with the s3 with confidence. We set out the main differences between the two handsets below.

Comparison of the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the Samsung Galaxy S5

Size and Weight
Perhaps surprisingly, the S4 is a little smaller than the S3, measuring 136.1 x 69.8mm, compared to the S3′s 136.6 x 70.6. Both handsets are 5 inches in height. The Galaxy S4 compares well against the S3 in terms of weight and thinness. It is thinner, at 7.9mm and lighter, at 130g compared to 133g. Bearing in mind the amount of technology that the S4 houses, it compares incredibly well with the S3 in terms of size and weight.

Screen/Display
The Samsung Galaxy S4 has a 5 inch full HD (1,920×1,080) Super AMOLED screen, which provides an astonishing 441ppi. Those specs measure up very favourably against the S3′s 4.6-inch HD display with a super sharp 1280 x 720 pixels resolution. That display has Super AMOLED – with Pentile Matrix and TouchWiz screen and a pixel density of 319 ppi. The Galaxy S4 is a definite improvement and is probably the best display on the market.

Processor/RAM
The S3′s 1.4GHz quad-core processor, accompanied by 1 Gigabyte of RAM is again surpassed by the S4, which provides two processor options. The first is the Octa-Core Samsung Exynos 5 processor, which is available with a 1.6GHz model. However, a 1.9GHz Quad-Core version will also be retailed, according to your location. RAM is also doubled in the Galaxy S4, to 2Gb.

Camera/Video
The S3 has an 8-megapixel camera with LED flash with 1080p full HD video capacity and can record at 30fps and take photos simultaneously. It is also a quad-band device and supports HSPA+ (21Mbps), WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n, energy efficient Bluetooth 4.0, NFC, GPS and GLONASS. It is certainly no slouch! However, the S4 has an incredible 13-megapixel rear camera, together with Flash and a high-speed shutter mode and a 2-megapixel camera at the front. In addition, the S4′s dual camera allows the user to work both cameras at the same time!

Storage
The S3 offers 16GB and 32GB storage, with and 64GB version and a micro SD port for additional storage and a free 50GB of Dropbox storage. Unsurprisingly, the Galaxy 24 stands up to comparison, with 16GB, 32GB and 64GB models being available. It also has a micro SD port and you can add 64GB of extra storage. Plenty of space to store data and applications and bearing in mind this phones capabilities, you may need it!

Operating System
The Galaxy S3 runs Android’s Ice Cream Sandwich OS, whilst the S4 will run Android Jelly Bean 4.2.1. Features of the OS include more sophisticated eye tracking software, Smart Pause which will know to retain thing when you look away from the phone and Smart Scroll which tilts the phone appropriately when it detects that you are looking at the screen. Air Gestures allow you to go to the top of lists, skip tunes, peruse images and answer calls without making physical contact with the screen.
Samsung has also introduced a new security feature, known as Knox, which will allow the user to separate work from play. Finally, S Voice Drive, activates when the user is driving, reads messages, takes dictated messages and allows voice navigation. Great new features, once again, making the comparison between the S3 and the S4 one that the S4 wins!

Battery Power
The S3 boasted a powerful battery capacity of 2100mAh. In comparison, the S4 has a massive 2600mAH, enabling it to run all of its features comfortably. It may be wise, nonetheless, to invest in a spare battery to make sure that you are not left high and dry after a day of heavy usage!

Summary
Although it is clear from this comparison between the Samsung Galaxy S3 and the Samsung Galaxy S4 that the S4 has the edge, that is hardly surprising. It is, after all, Samsung’s flagship smartphone. That should not detract, however, from the fact that the S3 remains a great handset. On the launch of the S4 there are also likely to be some great deals for the S3 for anyone who wants a great phone and isn’t too tied up with getting the very latest model.
